About Uprooting Anger, Inc.

History

The Search for Answers

In 1999 Robert and Kay Camenisch were directors of a residential treatment center for young men. Desperate parents called daily, begging them to take rebellious sons before they destroyed the family. Unable to accommodate so many young men, Robert and Kay began inviting the parents to come for a week of counseling to gain insight into ways to deal with their sons.

Kay was devastated by what she saw. The anger of parents was not only destroying their children—it was being passed down. In desperation, Kay began to search Scripture to learn more of God’s answers to the problem of anger. She discovered that the Bible has a lot to say on the subject.

As she studied specific passages, God gave new insights and she wrote each one down. She soon had a stack of meditations—and a deeper awareness that anger has many roots. If we want to be free of anger, we need to deal with the roots from which it springs.

A Book is Born

Kay never dreamed of writing a book. Soon after her search for answers, she and Robert moved, and she put her findings away. Time after time, God led her to pull them back out to share. Next, she began to edit them and added study questions to form a workbook. At someone’s urging, she found a chaplain who agreed to do a pilot study in a state prison in Florida to see if the study had value.

After many hurdles, she was ready to put the book back in the file, put away forever. But first, out of gratefulness and to show respect, she called the prison chaplain who had tested the study.

He was so excited about the changes God had brought in men’s lives through Uprooting Anger that Kay was impacted by what God was doing. He kept using phrases like, “This book is life to them,” and “They are changed men because of this study.”

She felt compelled by God to push through to publication. The book was published late in 2007 and has been used by individuals, churches, and in prisons and aftercare programs. God continues to change lives as people study His Word seeking help from God to overcome their anger.

Uprooting Anger has been approved and is recommended by Prison Fellowship and Prison Fellowship International. It has been translated into Spanish and work on further translation seems to be imminent.

Uprooting Anger Becomes Nonprofit

While at a Prison Fellowship-sponsored Out4Life Conference in 2010, an Executive Director of Prison Fellowship came to Kay. He advised her to have an independent program evaluation done of Uprooting Anger in order to validate the effectiveness of the study. Such a study will bring validation of results that will open the door for approval of the program by state correctional systems. He recommended a nonprofit organization to facilitate fundraising for the research and the ministry.

Consequently, Uprooting Anger, Inc. was formed in 2010. Plans are being made to begin the research project in 2011. Study groups are needed to be part of the evaluation of the program.

Step by step, a desire to find help for families that were devastated by anger has grown into a ministry that is abundantly above what we asked or thought.
